ANDRE PREVIN AND BOSTON SYMPHONY MUSICIANS TO PERFORM A BENEFIT CONCERT FOR TEREZÍN CHAMBER MUSIC FOUNDATION, SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 19 AT FAIRMONT COPLEY PLAZA HOTEL

CONCERT TO CELEBRATE NATIONWIDE RELEASE OF NEW EDUCATIONAL CURRICULUM, "FINDING A VOICE: MUSICIANS IN TEREZÍN."

Internationally renowned pianist, composer and conductor André Previn and members of the Boston Symphony Orchestra will perform a benefit concert for the education programs of the Terezín Chamber Music Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to assuring the permanence of music written by composers who perished in the Holocaust. The benefit will take place on Sunday, November 19th, at 4 PM in the Grand Ballroom of the Fairmont Copley Plaza Hotel in Boston. This special concert will celebrate the nationwide release to seven major U.S. cities of a new curriculum entitled "Finding a Voice: Musicians in Terezín."

For this concert, Mr. Previn will be joined by members of the Hawthorne String Quartet, featuring Boston Symphony musicians Haldan Martinson and Ronan Lefkowitz, violins, Mark Ludwig, viola, and cellist Sato Knudsen, in a performance of Mozartšs Piano Quartet in E flat, K.493. The program will also feature BSO percussionist Will Hudgins in a movement from Pavel Haas's The Monkey Mountain for string quartet and percussion as well a selection of works by composers who perished in the Holocaust.

This concert will benefit the continued development of Holocaust education programs in the US and Europe by the Terezín Chamber Music. This event will also celebrate the release of a new curriculum entitled "Finding a Voice: Musicians in Terezín." This curriculum, developed by Terezin Chamber Music Foundation and Facing History and Ourselves, examines through music the issues of censorship, propaganda, resistance, and survival during the tyranny of the Nazi Third Reich. Through investigation of the role of music in the lives of Third Reich victims as well as for their Nazi oppressors, students are encouraged and challenged to make connections to contemporary issues of human rights and tolerance. The curriculum includes a study guide and a compact disc recording of the Hawthorne String Quartet and percussionist Will Hudgins performing chamber music by composers who perished in the Holocaust. Also on the CD is a historic recording by one of the composers performing his own work.

Initially the curriculum will be released to public and private schools at the middle and senior high school levels. Regardless of size, communities across the United States will have access to the curriculum via the internet sites of both the Terezín Chamber Music Foundation and Facing History and Ourselves.

The Terezín Chamber Music Foundation was founded in 1986 to ensure the performance of music written by prisoners of the Terezín Concentration camp in what is now the Czech Republic. Since its founding, the Terezín Chamber Music Foundation has expanded its mission to include education programs, interfaith concerts, lecture series, recording and research projects, and children's programs, always maintaining the theme of relating Holocaust studies to contemporary issues of human rights and the ongoing struggle against racism and intolerance. The Terezín Chamber Music Foundation is committed to reaching and involving people of all beliefs and experiences in its programs. Mark Ludwig, Boston Symphony Orchestra violist, is the founder and director of the Terezin Chamber Music Foundation.

This benefit has been generously sponsored by MFS Investment Management.
