Anne-Sophie Mutter
Now at the pinnacle of her career, the German violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter has recently triumphed in New York City and nationwide with a spectacular series of programs surveying the 20th-century violin literature. A marathon of eight orchestral and chamber music concerts in Lincoln Center's Avery Fisher Hall and at Carnegie Hall within twelve days, and a repertory comprising the music of 14 different composers, had the musical press reaching for superlatives that included, "Her performance was, altogether, a triumph." The New York Times; "Mutter has it all: audience acclaim, critical respect, a technique second to none, a sense of musical adventure, the luxury to play what she wants, and classic ice-princess beauty." New York Magazine; "What to say about an artist who is exactly as good as her publicists say she is?" The New Yorker.

After the sold-out and acclaimed New York performances came an equally triumphant 12-city tour in February that included Boston, Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles and San Francisco. The artist's remarkable career began when, at the age of 13, she appeared as soloist with Herbert von Karajan and the Berlin Philharmonic at the 1977 Salzburg Whitsun Festival. Since then she has been in demand as an orchestral soloist and chamber musician in major musical centers throughout Europe, the Americas and the Far East.

Two years ago, Ms. Mutter had undertaken an equally demanding project: following years of study and research, she devoted the whole of 1998 to playing the cycle of ten Beethoven sonatas for piano and violin with pianist Lambert Orkis in 50 cities world-wide. The artists subsequently recorded the full cycle for Deutsche Grammophon and it was released in Fall 1998; in February 2000, it won the Grammy for Best Chamber Music Recording.

Nineteen ninety-nine was devoted to something completely different: after engagements with the Philadelphia Orchestra, Pittsburgh Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, and Boston Symphony, Ms. Mutter joined the renowned Norwegian chamber orchestra, the Trondheim Soloists, on a tour of Europe playing Vivaldi's Four Seasons and Tartini's The Devil's Trill Sonata. At the close of the tour, the musicians recorded both works, which have now been released on the DG label. Following recitals and orchestral concerts in the Far East, Ms. Mutter joined Maestro Kurt Masur and the World Youth Orchestra on a tour that included the opening of the Berlin season, and a Gala concert in Leipzig to benefit the rebuilding of the Thomaskirche in that city. The two musicians also collaborated at the Lucerne International Music Festival on September 8 commemorating the 10th Anniversary of Herbert von Karajan's death, and opened the Orchestre de Paris season on September 15. Two weeks later she was the guest soloist at the opening of the London Symphony Orchestra season with Sir Colin Davis. In November 1999, she played Penderecki Violin Concerto No. 2 on a major European tour with the Curtis Institute of Music Orchestra and conductor Andre Previn.

Her long list of recording honors includes several Grammy Awards, the Grand Prix du Disque, and Holland's Edison Award. In addition to winning the Grammy 2000 for best Chamber Music Recording for her recording of the complete Beethoven Sonatas for Piano and Violin, her release of Penderecki Violin Concerto No. 2 with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by the composer achieved the singular distinction of winning two Grammy Awards: for best instrumental soloist performance with orchestra, and for best classical contemporary composition. Ms. Mutter had earlier won a Grammy for her recording of the Berg Violin Concerto, coupled with Wolfgang Rihm's Time Chant. An ardent champion of contemporary music, Ms. Mutter has significantly expanded the repertory for her instrument. She has premiered works written for and dedicated to her by Witold Lutoslawski, Krzysztof Penderecki, Wolfgang Rihm, Norbert Moret, and Sebastian Currier. In April 2000, she premiered Penderecki's Violin Sonata, and over the next few years will give premieres of concertos by Henri Dutilleux, Pierre Boulez and Sofia Gubaidulina, and a new work from Sebastian Currier.

In 1987, Ms. Mutter established the Rudolf Eberle Endowment which supports talented young string players throughout Europe. In 1998, this endowment was incorporated into the Munich-based Circle of Friends of the Anne-Sophie Mutter Foundation to support talented young string players worldwide. She has a strong commitment to the social and medical problems of our time and continues to support work in these fields through regular benefit concerts. Two such events in 1999 were a Gala in Salzburg for the worldwide charity SOS Children's Villages, and a concert in Jerusalem to benefit the Chaim Sheba Medical Center near Tel Aviv.

During her recent recital tour of the United States, Ms. Mutter donated a portion of her fee for each recital to Classical Action: Performing Arts Against Aids. Ms. Mutter holds the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany; she also holds the Order of Merit of Bavaria and of Baden-Wuerttemberg.

Trondheim Soloists
The Trondheim Soloists chamber orchestra was founded in 1988 by violinist Bjarne Fiskum. The orchestra consists of young, extremely talented musicians; some are still students, and have already established an excellent international reputation. Their youthful freshness and vibrant musical joy and enthusiasm is praised in reviews after concerts in England, France, Spain, Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Brazil, Japan, and of course the Nordic countries.

In the spring of 1999, the orchestra did a five-week tour in Europe with violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, presenting the audience a very vivid The Four Seasons and Tartini's The Devil's Thrill Sonata; these concerts have been described by critics as "a unique, musical relationship," a statement seconded by Anne-Sophie Mutter as she recorded the same works with the Trondheim Soloists. The compact disc recording and four-minute video of The Four Seasons were released in October 1999 by Deutsche Grammophon.

The Trondheim Soloists have made seven recordings including The Four Seasons. They have recorded all music for strings by Edvard Grieg and the previous recordings have gathered glowing reviews in Gramophone, Fanfare, Fono Forum, Classic-CD and Diapson-Harmonie to mention a few. The latter honored the Trondheim Soloists with the prestigious French Diapson D'Or award for the recording of Grieg's String Quartet No. 1 in G-minor, Op. 27, arranged for chamber orchestra by Bjarne Fiskum.
